MONCTON (GNB) – A conference on tourism innovation was held in Moncton today as part of Innovation Week.

The conference was presented by the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture and the Centre Assomption de recherche et de développement en entrepreneuriat of the Université de Moncton. The event provided entrepreneurs, economic stakeholders and academics an opportunity to discuss entrepreneurial and innovative success in tourism.

In the New Brunswick Economic Growth Plan, the provincial government identifies tourism as one of 12 growth opportunities.

“New Brunswickers want us to focus on job creation and economic growth, and that is why the tourism industry plays an important role in our government’s economic vision,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “With more than 42,000 people working in tourism, this industry is a major engine of job creation. It is critical to emphasize innovative tourism products that give visitors unique, authentic experiences. We want to work with the industry to make New Brunswick a top tourist destination.”

During the conference, participants heard the following speakers talk about their successes in the tourism industry:

  • Mychèle Poitras, communications and marketing director at Petit-Sault Brewers
  • Diane LeClerc, owner of Sled Dog Adventures
  • Victoria Clarke, executive director of Discover Saint John
  • Rolande Thibodeau, president of Management 2000 Consulting
  • Debbie Norton, owner of Miramichi Outdoors

This event supports the activities of Innovation Week, May 4-12. This week is dedicated to celebrating innovation in New Brunswick and providing companies the opportunity to meet with government officials and pitch their ideas. The government is investing more than $160 million over the next four years to foster innovation and boost research and development in the province.
