SAINT JOHN (GNB) – Ten tall ships will sail into Saint John Aug. 18-20 as one of several Canada 150 celebrations taking place across the province.

“New Brunswickers are proud of who they are and where they come from,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister John Ames. “We have lots to celebrate here in New Brunswick, such as our beautiful landscapes, our innovative businesses and our wonderful people. We encourage New Brunswickers to join us in Saint John to experience the tall ships.”

The visit, part of the Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta Guest Ports Programme, will allow people to tour the vessels and participate in festivals and events in the community.

The provincial government is contributing $125,000. The federal government, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), is investing $100,000.

“The Government of Canada, through ACOA, is committed to supporting tourism projects that generate substantial economic opportunities,” said Saint John-Rothesay MP Wayne Long. “World-class events such as Festival of Sail contribute to the vibrancy of our communities for all citizens to enjoy, while showcasing the city’s tremendous assets and its rich history, increasing tourism and economic benefits for the entire region.”

Long attended for federal Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains, who is also the minister responsible for ACOA.

The Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta is a roughly 13,000-kilometre transatlantic race, visiting seven countries. As part of the Guest Ports Programme, 40 vessels will visit more than 30 Canadian ports. About 3,000 people aged 15-25 will be aboard the vessels.

“World-class events like the Saint John Festival of Sail would not be possible without the commitment of local champions like event chair Ron Ryan and his dedicated committee,” said Victoria Clarke, executive director of Discover Saint John. “This festival will generate economic impact in the millions for our hotels, restaurants, retailers and tour operators. And, as the only city on the Bay of Fundy, our urban waterfront will offer festivalgoers a unique vantage point from which to watch these magnificent ships rise and fall on the world’s highest tides.”
