MIRAMICHI (GNB) – One of New Brunswick’s lesser known but nationally significant historic sites is getting a makeover with support from the provincial government.

Miramichi Heritage Inc. will receive $75,000 to go toward a $108,000 renovation project at the Marine (Seamen’s) Hospital.

“Heritage places throughout our province benefit communities, strengthen identity and reinforce pride,” said Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Lisa Harris. “Reviving this building during Canada’s 150th anniversary is especially significant given that the Seamen’s Hospital is the oldest marine hospital still existing in Canada.”

Harris spoke on behalf of Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister John Ames.

Built in 1830, the hospital was used to care for sick and disabled seamen from ships in the timber trade in Miramichi Bay. It was financed from tonnage fees and built by the Port of Miramichi commissioners. The hospital closed in 1921, but the building was later used for local events.

“We are ecstatic at the support of the province to assist us in refurbishing this historical site,” said Christel Pond, president of Miramichi Heritage Inc. “Upon completion of the current work, we anticipate hosting additional community and cultural events for years to come.”

Renovations include foundation repairs, stone repointing, window repairs, accessibility improvements, installation of heat pumps, new flooring, interior repainting and new kitchen and bathroom fixtures.

The funding comes from the Community Cultural Places Program, which helps communities wishing to take advantage of their existing arts and heritage resources. New Brunswick’s heritage and culture play a significant role in the tourism sector, which is an important job creator, employing more than 42,000 people around the province.
