PRINCE WILLIAM (GNB) – Kings Landing will kick off its 43rd season on Saturday, June 10. This year, the historic village is introducing revamped programming as part of its ongoing experience renewal.

“As part of your government’s increased focus on the economic benefits of our tourism, heritage and culture sectors, we are encouraging New Brunswickers to explore the unique and amazing experiences and attractions that our province has to offer,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister John Ames. “Kings Landing is an adventure for all ages, and one that everyone should experience.”

“This season is shaping up to be one of our best,” said Kings Landing executive director Kevin Cormier. “There is certainly something for everyone each day of the summer and fall.”

In recent years, Kings Landing has worked to add more dynamic programming that changes and evolves as the season unfolds. A complete list of events is available online.

“Every day is a different experience at Kings Landing,” said Cormier. “It will be impossible to experience everything in a day. You will want a season pass for sure!”

In addition to the famous living history village that showcases some of New Brunswick’s most interesting stories and people, Kings Landing is rolling out a series of galleries with more than 40 exhibits, showcasing some of the finest pieces from its collection of more than 70,000 artifacts.

Kings Landing is also expanding its series of free drop-in workshops held each day in the welcome centre. As well, a new workshop space has been added to the C.B. Ross Factory Gallery, which will host specialized workshops and presentations.

“Kings Landing’s workshop series provides a great opportunity for anyone, of any skill level, to learn time-honoured techniques during their visit,” said Jeff McCarthy, director of visitor experience.

Also new this season is the recently built summer stage that serves as an outdoor concert venue. It will host performances by the Stanford School of Irish Dance, Céilí Kids of Canada, Miramichi Folklore Park’s Heritage Players, and other Maritime performers throughout the 2017 season.

Kings Landing has invited others to help showcase and celebrate history, and several local organizations are ready to contribute.

“Our team is pleased with the outpouring of responses we have had from local organizations and artisans looking to join in and share with our guests,” said Cormier. “When you visit Kings Landing this year, you will notice a lot more community involvement in exhibits, workshops, presentations and even the products available in the gift shop.”

During opening weekend, June 10 and 11, Patrick Steeves will celebrate the launch of his album, Folk Family Favourites, at the King’s Head Inn from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. each day. The album was inspired by Patrick’s time at Kings Landing. On Sunday, June 11, at 1:30 p.m., local author Sharon Bird will host a special reading of excerpts from her book, Through the Eyes of Mary.

Candle making is the subject of the drop-in workshop on Saturday, June 10. On Sunday, June 11, the workshop will focus on printmaking. A variety of 19th-century activities, such as butter making, crosscut sawing, and baking will be taking place in the village throughout the weekend, as well.

Kings Landing is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The settlement is 20 minutes west of Fredericton at Exit 253 on the Trans-Canada Highway.
