FREDERICTON (GNB) – A well-known theatre company will be touring the province in celebration of Canada 150 with support from the government.

The Calithumpians’ Fredericton Outdoor Summer Theatre will receive $40,000 from the provincial government to mount a travelling show this summer.

“Your government understands the important impact that art and culture can have on economic growth, particularly in the tourism sector,” said deputy premier Stephen Horsman. “This production will travel throughout the province to local festivals and events, giving New Brunswickers yet another reason to get out and explore our beautiful province as a day trip or getaway.”

Horsman spoke on behalf of Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister John Ames.

The bilingual show, which is 30-45 minutes in length, will feature themes relating to New Brunswick’s pivotal role in Confederation and in keeping the union together in the early years. It will also have a local historical element, a topical element, an environmental element and a message about the province’s potential. Certain aspects will be common in all shows, however other unique material created specifically for local venues will be added.

The production also received a $38,000 grant from the Canadian Heritage department’s Canada 150 Fund.
