HOPEWELL CAPE (GNB) – The final tiles for New Brunswick’s contribution to a national mosaic project were painted over the weekend by 23 students participating in the provincial heritage fair showcase. The event took place at the Albert County Museum and R.B. Bennett Interpretive Centre in Hopewell Cape.

Students were selected through an extensive judging process that began with school-based fairs held throughout the province during Heritage Week in February.

“Your government understands the important role that art and culture plays in our province,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister John Ames. “This beautiful mosaic mural is the work of students throughout New Brunswick who participated in our regional heritage fairs. It enabled students to come together as a provincewide community to become active participants in a project of national significance.”

From 138 schools, 850 students gathered at regional heritage fairs to deliver hands-on, multimedia presentations on Canadian people, legends, milestones and achievements. Students also had the opportunity to paint tiles at the regional fairs.

A series of mosaic murals is being created as part of a national initiative commemorating the 150th anniversary of Confederation. The Town of St. Stephen, which also participated, unveiled its mural earlier this month.

The students’ mural, which measures about six square metres, will be unveiled to the public when it is permanently installed in Government House in Fredericton. Lt.-Gov. Jocelyne Roy Vienneau is the honorary patron of heritage fairs in New Brunswick.
