FREDERICTON (CNB) - New Brunswickers are being invited by Lt.-Gov. Graydon Nicholas to help him mark Victoria Day with a royal salute at noon on Monday, May 24.
Members of the 3rd Field Artillery Regiment of Saint John will conduct a 21-gun salute on the grounds of Government House, 51 Woodstock Rd., Fredericton.
"This event is meant to honour the official birthday of Queen Elizabeth II, Canada's reigning sovereign, as well as to pay tribute to the birthday of Queen Victoria, for whom this holiday is named," said Nicholas. "This is my first opportunity to mark this event as New Brunswick's 30th lieutenant-governor, and I hope the public will join me."
Nicholas will also inspect the reserve soldiers who are part of the Royal Canadian Artillery, called the Loyal Company for its allegiance to the Queen. The salute will consist of four, 105-mm howitzer guns, firing a 21-gun salute over the St. John River.
Next month, Nicholas will travel to England to attend a private audience with the Queen.
"I want to take the good wishes of all New Brunswickers with me to Buckingham Palace," said Nicholas. "So, I hope people will join me in marking this important holiday - part of the first long weekend of summer."
