FREDERICTON (CNB) – Lt.-Gov. Graydon Nicholas is opening the doors of Government House to royal watchers who want to see the “wedding of the century” but who cannot get to London on April 29.

Big-screen televisions will be set-up in the reception rooms of New Brunswick’s ceremonial home of the lieutenant-governor to watch the wedding of Prince William of Wales and Kate Middleton.

"As the future King and Queen of Canada, we know there is great interest in the upcoming wedding of Prince William and his fiancée, Catherine Middleton," said Nicholas. “Our province has always been a welcoming place to members of the Royal Family, and we want New Brunswickers to feel they are a part of the celebration."

"Guests will be treated to a wedding-style reception, and we hope people will come dressed for a wedding," said Nicholas, who has served as lieutenant-governor since September, 2009. "I am privileged to represent the groom's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and I have had the pleasure of meeting Her Majesty on two occasions."

Government House will open at 6 a.m. on Friday, April 29.

"It will be an early morning, and a memorable day," said Tim Richardson, principal secretary to the lieutenant-governor. and chief of staff at Government House. "I know people feel ownership for this building, and there is great respect for the monarchy in general. So we want New Brunswickers to be part of this wedding, in this historic residence."

"However, because we anticipate tremendous interest, space will be limited," said Richardson. "We will take reservations so that no one is disappointed that morning."

Individuals interested in attending may make reservations by calling the Office of the Lieutenant-Governor at 506-453-2505 or by e-mail at [email protected].

"Wear your hats, bring your royal memorabilia, and come to Government House to watch this historic wedding ceremony," Nicholas said. "For those who do not want to get up so early, we will have a book of congratulations available.  People can drop by over the next month to write a personal message of best wishes to the happy couple."

The guest book is available at the public entrance of Government House, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays until June 3. The intention is to present the book of good wishes to Prince William and Kate Middleton during their trip to Canada this summer.

"They will not be visiting New Brunswick, and we regret that, but we can still mark the royal couple and their important day with this public viewing," said Nicholas.
