SAINT JOHN (GNB) – The new Saint John Law Courts building has officially opened. The ceremony was attended by Lt-.Gov. Graydon Nicholas, Premier David Alward, Justice Minister Troy Lifford and Attorney General Hugh Flemming.
"Ensuring all citizens have safe access to the justice system is a key part of our government's plan to rebuild New Brunswick," said Alward. "Our government is committed to upholding the administration of justice throughout New Brunswick, and the Saint John Law Courts are a welcome addition to our province's judicial system."
The complex features 13 courtrooms, two hearing rooms, a secure detention centre as well as chambers for the judiciary. It also has offices for court services administration personnel, public prosecutions, lawyers, sheriffs, police and staff from other provincial departments.
"The new courthouse responds to present and future operational requirements for the Saint John region," Lifford said. "It also ensures the safety of staff, the judiciary and the public in a facility that is accessible."
The first court sessions were held in the facility on June 24.
