FREDERICTON (GNB) – Lt.-Gov. Jocelyne Roy Vienneau and her husband, Ronald, invite all residents of the province to join them in welcoming the new year at the annual New Year’s Day Levee at Government House in Fredericton.
“The historic residence was completed and opened in December 1828,” said Roy Vienneau. “The New Year’s Levee was one of the first events held here, and it is a tradition which we gladly continue in 2018. I hope many people will drop in between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 1, to say hello and celebrate the peace, friendships and culture on which New Brunswick was founded.
“Government House also looks wonderful during the holidays, and we want to share this national and provincial historic site with all New Brunswickers,” said Roy Vienneau. “We will serve traditional Acadian fricot, sweets and hot cider, there will be music, and people can tour the residence.”
Two special exhibits are on display. Sixteen new works by indigenous artists compose an exhibit called Peace, Friendship, Culture, which can be found in a special gallery on the main floor. On the second floor, members of Fredericton’s Heritage Rug Hooking Guild have nearly 100 colourful rugs and matts on display, celebrating the guild’s 35 years.
Donations of non-perishable food items will be accepted for the Greener Village Food Bank. Parking is available behind the Victoria Health Centre.
