FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following statement regarding the appointment of Brenda Murphy to the office of lieutenant-governor of New Brunswick was issued today by Premier Blaine Higgs:

On behalf of all New Brunswickers, I would like to congratulate Ms. Murphy on her appointment as the 32nd lieutenant-governor of New Brunswick.

The announcement of a new lieutenant-governor is a significant occasion for our province. This is an important role, and Ms. Murphy will be called upon to promote New Brunswick’s sense of identity, support causes important to the province and help recognize outstanding citizens in the years ahead.

I am confident that Ms. Murphy is up to these tasks and will bring her years of experience to this new role. She has already demonstrated her commitment to our province through her work aimed at ending poverty and family violence, and advancing women’s equality, and I know she will continue to do so as our new lieutenant-governor.

Her experience leading the Saint John Women’s Empowerment Network, as a member of the National Advisory Council on Poverty and the New Brunswick Advisory Council on the Status of Women, along with her having served three terms as a municipal councillor for the Town of Grand Bay-Westfield provide her a wealth of knowledge as she embarks upon this new role.

I look forward to working closely with Ms. Murphy in the years to come.

We continue to remember the many great accomplishments of New Brunswick’s 31st lieutenant-governor, Jocelyne Roy Vienneau, who passed away on Aug. 2 following a courageous battle with cancer.
