FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government will issue a new Class 1 air quality approval for the J.D. Irving Ltd. Grande-Rivière sawmill in Saint-Léonard.

The company’s current approval expires on Nov. 30 with the new approval taking effect on Dec. 1. The approval follows a public consultation that ran from March 20 to Aug. 16.

The Saint Léonard sawmill produces about 350 million board feet of dimensional lumber per year. The facility was built by J.D. Irving and commenced operations in 1987. The mill has a building area of about 8,864 sq. metres (98,489 sq. ft.) and employs 285 people.

Class 1 industrial facilities are required to comply with the Air Quality Regulation under the Clean Air Act and to operate under the terms and conditions established in the approval to operate.
