FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government has eliminated the fees for licence plates for volunteer firefighters, effective Jan. 2, 2020.

“Volunteer firefighters are there when their neighbours need them most,” said Public Safety Minister Carl Urquhart. “Eliminating the fees they pay for firefighter plates is a small way for us to recognize the contributions they make to the vitality of their communities. This fulfills a government platform commitment.”

The province currently issues an average of 500 volunteer firefighters plates a year at a cost of $50 a plate, the same cost as for most other licence plates.

Firefighter plates were introduced in 2001 at the request of the New Brunswick Association of Fire Chiefs.

To qualify for a firefighter plate, an individual must be on the list supplied to the province by the New Brunswick Association of Fire Chiefs. The association requires applicants to complete their Fire Fighter I training course and be a member of a department for at least one year. The firefighter must also be a registered owner of the vehicle to which the plate is assigned.

Firefighters who wish to have the plate fee waived will also be required to provide, at the time of purchase, proof that they are a volunteer in good standing.
