FREDERICTON (GNB) – A candlelight memorial and panel discussion was held today on the 30th anniversary of the massacre of 14 women at the École Polytechnique in Montreal.
“It is important that we continue to remember the students who were killed that day and to talk about violence against women. Further, we must all take action to stop the violence,” said Service New Brunswick Minister Sherry Wilson, who is also the minister responsible for women’s equality. “We should educate ourselves about the signs that indicate someone may be a victim of violence and learn how to support them. We must stop violence that impacts future generations.”
Candles were lit in memory of the 14 young women who were killed while studying at the engineering institution. A 15th candle was lit in memory of all the women who have died due to domestic and intimate partner violence.
A panel discussion was held involving NB South Central Transition House & Second Stage Coalition Inc., the Coalition for Pay Equity and the University of New Brunswick Diversity Within Engineering group. The discussion was on gender-based violence; women in science, technology, engineering and math; and impacts on women’s economic security.
MLAs, civil servants, and representatives of community organizations that provide services to victims of violence attended the memorial.
