FREDERICTON (GNB) – Lt.-Gov. Brenda Murphy invites all residents of the province to join her and her partner Linda Boyle in welcoming the new year at the annual New Year’s Day Levee at Government House in Fredericton.
“We are looking forward to hosting our first New Year’s Day levee,” said Murphy. “Government House looks absolutely beautiful during the holidays and we want to share this national and provincial historic treasure with all New Brunswickers.”
“I look forward to welcoming many New Brunswickers on Jan. 1 between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to usher in a new year filled with peace, hope and love,” she said. “We will serve traditional tourtière, sweets and hot cider, there will be music, and people can tour the residence.”
The public galleries showcase an exhibit titled Fibre Expressions 2019 featuring work by the Fredericton Guild of Fibre Artists and Embroiderers’ Guild of Fredericton. The public rooms of Government House include period art and antiques made in the province by expert craft workers.
The public will also have an opportunity to see the two large portraits of Queen Elizabeth II on display in the foyer. A 2012 portrait painted by Canadian artist Philip James Richards for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is currently on display for a short time as part of a cross-country tour of Canada’s Official Residences. It joins a portrait of the Queen painted in 1956 by Sir William Oliphant Hutchinson, of Scotland, and gifted to Government House in 2016.
Donations of non-perishable food items will be accepted for the Greener Village Food Bank. Parking is available behind the Victoria Health Centre.
