FREDERICTON (GNB) – A joint federal-provincial $9.1 million investment was announced today that will help two community organizations create 25 new housing units in the Fredericton region.

The announcement is part of the third round of funding under the federal Rapid Housing Initiatives city stream.

The provincial government’s contribution includes $1.82 million in capital funding plus 20-year rent supplements valued at $2.28 million.

“The province’s investment and ongoing operational support in the form of rent supplements ensures these projects and organizations can provide affordable rent to their tenants," said Service New Brunswick Minister Jill Green, who is also minister responsible for housing. “Our government has been working with our partners and stakeholders under the Rapid Housing Initiative, and we look forward to continuing this important collaboration to provide better housing options for our residents.”

The federal government is providing $5 million in capital funding.

“Everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to call home,” said federal Housing and Diversity and Inclusion Minister Ahmed Hussen. “Through the Rapid Housing Initiative, we are quickly providing new affordable housing units for people who need them most, right across Canada, including in New Brunswick. The Government of Canada is working closely with the Province of New Brunswick and Indigenous partners to provide homes for vulnerable people and Indigenous communities. This is one of the many ways our National Housing Strategy continues to ensure no one is left behind.”

The City of Fredericton was the recipient of the third round of funding under the federal initiative. The funding will support:

• Mahsus Lane Development – Skigin-Elnoog Housing Corporation for 17 housing units; and

• John Howard Society of Fredericton for eight housing units.

The two projects will target First Nations, newcomers, Black Canadians, and women and children fleeing domestic violence.

This investment is in addition to previous provincial funding allocations under round one and two of the federal initiative of $7.53 million in capital funding and $18.5 million in rent supplement funding over 20 years.
