FREDERICTON (CNB) – The following statement was issued today by Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries Minister Michael Olscamp to mark National Soil Conservation Week, April 17-23:

National Soil Conservation Week is an ideal opportunity to promote and recognize beneficial soil management practices.

Soil is the foundation of agriculture and food production. That is why we must ensure its protection and sustainable use.

New Brunswick’s agricultural producers and professional have become leaders in this sector. New technologies based on agricultural research as well as practices for improving crop productivity and sustainability are available.

Just recently, Robert Thériault of New Brunswick was named a soil conservation champion by the Soil Conservation Council of Canada. I offer him my sincere congratulations.

Our government is working very hard to support those who care about soil conservation in New Brunswick. It is evident that beneficial soil management practices lead to better yields and crops of superior quality.

Through the Growing Forward federal-provincial-territorial policy framework, we support the various environmental farm plans, along with many other programs that benefit producers in the province.

As we celebrate National Soil Conservation Week, which overlaps with Earth Day, we should remember how precious our environment is and that it is our duty to take care of it. It is therefore important for each of us to be active within our communities so that, together, we can ensure that our planet's resources are preserved and will still be there for future generations.
