FREDERICTON (CNB) – The provincial government is helping agriculture producers and agri-businesses to market New Brunswick agri-food products locally. Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries Minister Michael Olscamp made the announcement today.

"Buying local is good for our industry and good for our economy," said Olcamp. "The New Brunswick Agri-Food Market Development Program provides assistance to producers, farm markets, associations and agri-food businesses to help improve the sale and consumption of local agri-food products."

A new element to the program is being implemented this year as a pilot project. The New Brunswick Food Harvest Fundraising element will encourage eligible organizations to buy New Brunswick agri-food products as part of fundraising meals that benefit an identified need within a New Brunswick community, such as food banks and community gardens.

"I wish to see more New Brunswickers buying local,” said Olscamp."Encouraging the use of New Brunswick agri-food products during fundraising meals will help communities and promote local products."

Program assistance through the Agri-Food Market Development Program is available for marketing activities such as road signage, promotional material, website development, agri-tourism, developing and launching new products and establishing marketing groups.

The department has developed this programming in consultation with the 10-member Agri-Food Market Development Industry Advisory Committee.
