SAINT ANDREWS (CNB) – New Brunswick is the host of this year’s meeting of federal, provincial and territorial ministers responsible for agriculture.

The meeting, to take place in Saint Andrews from July 6 to 8, will be co-chaired by Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries Minister Michael Olscamp and Gerry Ritz, federal minister of agriculture.

"These meetings are an opportunity to work together on issues of common interest," said Olscamp. "Although our agriculture sectors may vary from one jurisdiction to the other, our collaboration in the development of agriculture policies and programs to promote long-term competitiveness of the sector is of benefit to producers across the country. I cannot emphasize enough the significance of the agriculture and agri-food sector. It is about food and food production, both of which impact every New Brunswicker and every Canadian.”

The main topic will be the development of the next agriculture policy framework, Growing Forward 2. The ministers will also discuss science and innovation, traceability and the latest trade developments.

"New Brunswick has a diverse agriculture and agri-food sector and as host this year, I look forward to showcasing what we do best here – our local products and famous Maritime hospitality," said Olscamp.

The agriculture and agri-food industry in New Brunswick includes more than 2,700 farms and 100 processing plants producing close to $1.2 billion worth of agri-food and beverage products each year.
