FREDERICTON (GNB) – Consumers in New Brunswick will pay an extra three cents per litre for milk as of Feb. 1.

“The New Brunswick Farm Products Commission has determined that a price adjustment was warranted based on several factors, with the most significant factor being the steadily increasing costs of the production, processing and delivery of milk to consumers,” said commission chair Bob Shannon. “By increasing the price of milk by three cents per litre, the commission has managed to balance the interests of New Brunswick dairy producers, processors and consumers.”

The increase is broken down in the following manner: producers will receive less than one cent of the increase, processors will receive about one and one-half cents, with the remaining increase going to retailers.

Pricing under the School Milk Program will remain unchanged for the current school year. The program, in existence since 1995, provides significant savings to schoolchildren in the province by having processors and producers subsidize the price of milk in schools. In recent years, this subsidy has amounted to about $1.3 million a year.
 
“I thank the dairy producers and processors for their continued financial support of the School Milk Program which ensures that students from kindergarten to Grade 12 have access to nutritious high-quality food,” said Shannon.  

The New Brunswick Farm Products Commission represents producers, processors and consumers and is responsible for setting the price of fluid milk products in the province.
