SACKVILLE (GNB) – Organic food and farming will be celebrated in New Brunswick as part of National Organic Week, Sept. 21 - 28. This is the first time that National Organic Week has been proclaimed in New Brunswick.
“I am pleased to join communities across the province to celebrate the contributions that the organic sector has made to the sustainability of the local food systems," said Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries Minister Michael Olscamp.
Olscamp presented the proclamation to representatives of the Atlantic Canadian Organic Regional Network during the opening of the Bud Doncaster Memorial Agricultural Field Day at the Sackville Fall Fair.
"National Organic Week is an opportunity to showcase the many environmental, health and community benefits of organic food and farming,” said Tegan Renner, New Brunswick co-ordinator of the regional network. “The Atlantic Canadian Organic Regional Network is thrilled to see the New Brunswick government recognize these contributions and demonstrate its support to the organic sector with this proclamation."
A number of restaurants, markets and retailers will celebrate the week with special dinners, in-store specials, tastings and displays of organic food. Many events will feature food from some of the 56 organic operations in the province, highlighting the diversity of organic products available, which includes vegetables, maple syrup, chicken, beef, apples, cranberries and flour.
