MONCTON (CNB) – A new state-of-art high school to replace Moncton High will be built on the Royal Oaks site, situated in the 1800 block of Elmwood Drive.
"This new facility will offer students a safe, modern and dynamic learning environment in a part of the city expected to experience considerable future growth," said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Jody Carr. "Today's announcement is a bold response to the needs of Moncton High students and of the community-at-large."
This selection of the Royal Oaks site comes following an extensive process that saw more than 20 possible locations considered. Its strategic location in relation to the Moncton High catchment area, the amount of available green space and the additional benefit of having the Royal Oaks developer commit to the restoration of the existing Moncton High School were among the advantages taken into account.
"We understand the historical significance of Moncton High School to the community," said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams. "That is why our goal has been to work with the community on solutions that would see this heritage building preserved."
Williams repeated the provincial government's commitment to continue working with the City of Moncton as the project proceeds.
The Department of Supply and Services will issue a tender for the construction of the new Moncton High School.
Harry Doyle, chair of the District 2 Education Council, said the district can now move forward with other aspects of the project.
"I would like to recognize everyone involved for their understanding throughout this process; for their patience and willingness to propose solutions," he said. "Today's announcement means that students can look forward to a new school in September 2013 and the community can look forward to the preservation of a wonderful heritage property that means so much to so many."
