MONCTON (GNB) – Construction is underway on a $10-million elementary school to replace the aging École Sainte-Bernadette in Moncton.

“We are excited to be moving ahead with building this school to meet the 21st century needs of the students and staff of Sainte-Bernadette,” said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Jody Carr. “The new facility will help us to continue to deliver on our mission to provide an inclusive, modern, dynamic learning environment for our children.”

The new school is being built on the existing site at 70 Chapman St. The current school will continue to function until the new building opens in September 2013.

“During the past 10 years, the student population has been growing at École Sainte-Bernadette,” said Social Development Minister Sue Stulz. “The new facility will provide a modern learning and working environment for students and staff, while helping meet the needs of families in the Greater Moncton region.”

Stulz attended the announcement on behalf of Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams.

Marco Construction of Dartmouth, N.S., was awarded the construction contract following a tendering process. The new school will have 17 classrooms, a double gymnasium, a multi-purpose room, art and music rooms, science and technology labs, a library and cafeteria, project work areas for students, and an outdoor playground and sports field.
