SAINT JOHN (GNB) – The Route 1 – One Mile House Interchange officially opened today.

"This new infrastructure will provide the trucking industry with more direct access to the city's industrial park," said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams. "It supports economic growth and development in the Port City while improving safety and traffic flow."

The $83-million project consisted of design and construction of a new interchange over Route 1 that connects Route 1 with the industrial park on the east side of Saint John.

"This project was a priority for our government, for New Brunswick and for Saint John residents," said Saint John MP Rodney Weston. "This new interchange will significantly improve road safety for area residents and travellers while reducing congestion. Through this project, and others like it, our government is creating new jobs and stimulating the local economy."

Weston was appearing on behalf of Denis Lebel, federal minister of infrastructure, communities and intergovernmental affairs.

The provincial government invested $51.3 million, while the federal government provided the other $31.7 million through the Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund. This project helped create more than 300 jobs.

Completion of this project helps the provincial government meet its safety and efficiency objectives for the National Highway System. The provincial government identified the interchange as part of its long-term transportation strategy.
