FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government will provide $60,000 next fiscal year to help improve the condition of roads used for agricultural purposes.

“We are continuing this program for improving roads used by farmers to transport their produce to markets,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams. “The benefit to the agriculture sector is significant. Better access to farmland and property supports this industry and promotes economic growth in rural communities.”

About 40 agricultural resource roads will be graded in 2014-15. The Agricultural Alliance of New Brunswick provided the government with a list of roads used by farmers which are in need of an upgrade. The list is being finalized by the department.

The work will be carried out by crews and equipment from the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure during the upcoming summer construction season. Some brush cutting will also be done as part of the program.

In fiscal 2013-14, $50,000 had been invested for agricultural roads in the province.
