FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government’s aircraft has been sold for $2.5 million (U.S.) to Can-West Corporate Air Charters Ltd., a public service Medevac contractor for the Province of Alberta.
“The sale of the government plane will help the province meet its fiscal challenges,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams. “I am also pleased to see the aircraft put to good use as part of an air ambulance service in another province.”
The provincial government purchased the 2006 King Air B200 aircraft in 2008. Regular use of the plane has been declining in recent years, while costs remained for flight crew salaries, insurance, fuel and maintenance totalling about $896,000 annually.
Williams said the government will now charter flight services as needed to meet the travel needs of the premier and cabinet ministers flying on government business.
A request for proposals was issued in January for charter flight services and closed on Feb. 14. The results are now being reviewed by an evaluation committee.
