MONCTON (GNB) – The Moncton High School property has been posted for sale on the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure's website.

“Marketing the property on our website is the next best option for identifying a future use and ensuring that Moncton High School continues to have a key role in the community,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams. “We remain committed to preserving and respecting the history and heritage of the building as we continue to seek opportunities for the property.”

Since 2012, the province has issued two requests for proposals seeking a mixed-use project for the 78-year-old school. The vision includes, but is not limited to, arts and culture, community space, residential, retail and commercial space, or green space. One submission was received from the first request for proposals, but it did not meet the established criteria for the project. One submission received for the second request for proposals was later withdrawn by the proponent. Williams said in each case the private sector has not been able to meet the conditions placed on building in presenting a business case.

“The property will be maintained by the province until it is sold and the conditions for protecting its history and heritage will remain as part of the sale,” Williams said. “The same evaluation committee, utilized in the request for proposals process, has been working with us on establishing the basic re-development conditions to be met by potential buyers.”

Moncton High School is located on 2.8 hectares (seven acres) at 207 Church St. within the City of Moncton's Heritage Preservation Area. The property has been priced at $1 million to reflect the substantial costs associated with remediation and re-development. The school will not be decommissioned until the new Moncton High School opens on Elmwood Drive later this year.

Williams said a repurposing project for the property has the potential to stimulate the local economy and breathe new life into the building. More information is available online.
