MONCTON (GNB) – The first New Brunswick project under the New Building Canada Fund will be upgrades to Route 11.

The fund is a component of the New Building Canada Plan, the largest and longest federal infrastructure plan in the country's history. This commitment will provide $53 billion over the next decade to support provincial, territorial and municipal infrastructure.

"Investing in key transportation infrastructure such as Route 11 is a foundation of our government's plan to create jobs and make life better in New Brunswick communities," said Premier David Alward. "These important upgrades will improve safety on Route 11 and promote economic growth throughout the entire region by connecting with vital trade links like rail and the ports of Belledune and Dalhousie"

The project will see significant upgrades to Route 11 in the Shediac region which will improve safety for those using the highway and the movement of goods along this route. The project involves the construction of a new 6.8-kilometre four-lane controlled access bypass and twinning of the existing two-lane controlled access highway from Route 15 in Shediac to the south side of the Shediac River.

"The federal government's support for public infrastructure has never been stronger," said federal Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs Denis Lebel. "We are pleased to work with Premier Alward and the provincial government to approve projects under the New Building Canada Plan. This will ensure that infrastructure funding continues to flow in New Brunswick as we focus on creating jobs, promoting growth, and building strong, prosperous communities across Canada.

"We are proud to invest in infrastructure upgrades to this section of Route 11, which will focus on promoting economic growth and improving mobility in the Shediac region and increasing safety for all those who use the highway system."

Over the next 10 years, New Brunswick will benefit from approximately $866 million in dedicated federal funding, including about $394 million under the New Building Canada Fund.
