FREDERICTON (GNB) -- The following message was issued today by Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Roger Melanson:

As New Brunswickers, we are accustomed to inclement weather. But over the last 48 hours, we have seen some record snowfall and rainfall amounts in various areas of our province.

Heavy rainfall has caused extensive damage, washing away roads, culverts and creating dangerous driving conditions, especially throughout the southeast of the province.

It is imperative for motorists to exercise caution when driving around areas where flooding or washouts may have occurred. In particular, we ask drivers and pedestrians to be alert and comply with any temporary signage.

The department’s crews are working hard to keep our roadways safe during this weather event, but we remind all motorists to respect the barriers that have been put up by public officials - the structural integrity of roads could sometimes be compromised without there being any apparent damage.

Cleanup and damage assessment is ongoing and all necessary repairs will be carried out.

The rainfall has subsided in most areas of the province, but with the mild temperature, some flooding may still occur.

Our priority is keeping motorists safe on our roads. We thank you for your co-operation and understanding.
