MONCTON (GNB) – The Breast Health Centre was officially opened today at the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre in Moncton.

The project represents a total investment of nine million dollars. Construction of the facility, which is an annex of the Dr. Léon-Richard Oncology Centre, began in the fall of 2013.

"Our government is proud to provide improved access to top-quality health-care services for all New Brunswickers,” said Health Minister Victor Boudreau. “This new Breast Health Centre will enable health professionals to offer more collaborative and better co-ordinated care to patients. It is equipped with state-of-the-art technology."

In operation since early February, the centre offers a complete range of outpatient services to the entire province, all under one roof, with integrated services adapted to patient needs.

“Making life easier for New Brunswick families is one of the main priorities of our government,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Roger Melanson. “Today, we are proud to officially open the new Breast Health Centre, ensuring patients from all regions in New Brunswick receive the best possible health care through viable and efficient infrastructure.”

Vitalité Health Network’s board chair Paul Couturier welcomed the project’s completion.

“This is a project that was born from a community-based initiative back in 2002,” said Couturier. “The centre is now a reality thanks to the determination of a number of people who are committed to their mission, including the members of the Breast Cancer Survivors Committee, health-care professionals and stakeholders. Because of them, we can take pride in this state-of-the-art infrastructure for the entire population of New Brunswick.”

The CHU Dumont Foundation was an important partner in the project, having paid for a $475,000 Breast Tomosynthesis unit, thanks to the generosity of a major donor.

“The foundation works to promote the Vitalité Health Network’s mission by assisting with the completion of projects for the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre, always with the focus of improving health-care services offered at our hospital and ensuring patient well-being,” said CHU Dumont Foundation general manager Jacques Leblanc.

The Dr. Léon-Richard Oncology Centre has one of the most comprehensive oncology programs in the Atlantic Provinces. The establishment of the Breast Health Centre will allow medical personnel to offer optimal services to cancer patients with a multidisciplinary approach specialized in the areas of prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment of breast abnormalities (benign and malignant).
