BATHURST (GNB) – A highway upgrade will soon begin on Route 134 in Bathurst under the Municipal Designated Highway Program.

Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Roger Melanson announced today that a 0.8-km section of Route 134, also known as St. Peter Avenue, will be paved and widened in Bathurst.

He also announced that new storm sewers, curbs, and gutters will be installed, and paving will be done on a 0.5-km stretch of Route 134, from Du Parc Street East to Comeau Street in Beresford.

“Our government is proud to be investing in these municipal projects, which will significantly help to stimulate our economy, create jobs, and move New Brunswick forward,” said Melanson. “We must maintain our transportation network to help improve our quality of life, facilitate travel for New Brunswickers, and enhance economic activity in our province.”

“We are pleased to partner with the province on this work and join the minister in making this announcement,” said Bathurst Mayor Stephen Brunet. “These projects will benefit the residents of Bathurst and the larger region.”

Under the Municipal Designated Highway Program municipalities apply to the provincial government for funding assistance for capital upgrades. The province provides funding each year for priority projects.
