BATHURST (GNB) – A new bridge will be built to replace the structure known as Tetagouche River No. 2.

A tender for the multi-year project will be issued this spring to build a new two-lane concrete bridge on Route 315. The new three-span bridge will replace the existing one built in 1915, which is too narrow for two lanes and is subject to a five-tonne weight restriction.

“We know how important modern, functional infrastructure is to the New Brunswickers who rely on it,” said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Brian Kenny. “We are making the necessary investments in our infrastructure to support our economy and quality of life.”

Kenny spoke on behalf of Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser.

More than $76 million will be invested in bridges this year as part of the department’s capital budget.

The replacement of Tetagouche River No. 2 is part of more than $15 million in investments to improve roads, bridges and highways in the Chaleur and Acadian Peninsula regions.

“Commitments like these are investments in the future of the communities and the people of this region,” Kenny said. “I am proud to be part of a government that is making the right decision, listening to people and getting things done.”

The province’s $775.6-million capital budget, which includes the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s capital budget of $638.5 million, reflects the government’s priority to support its public buildings, highways and bridges.
