FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government will issue a new Class 1 air quality approval for Glencore Canada Corp. – Brunswick Smelter.

The company's current approval expires on Nov. 14 with the new one taking effect on Nov. 15. The approval follows a public consultation process that included a 120-day public review that ran from May 14 to Sept. 15.

The company operates a lead smelter and a material handling facility in Belledune. The smelter produces up to 120,000 tonnes of refined lead per year. The material handling facility handles up to 750,000 tonnes of bulk products including lead and zinc concentrates, coke, sulphuric acid and recycled batteries.

The facility has been in operation under several different business names since 1966.  Significant investments have been made to upgrade emission control equipment and material handling operations over the last 30 years.

The information, along with approval conditions, can be viewed on the Department of Environment and Local Government website or at any regional office of the department.

Class 1 major industries are required to comply with the Air Quality Regulation under the Clean Air Act, and to operate under the terms and conditions established in the approval to operate.
