SUSSEX (CNB) – The provincial government will hold an informal public information session for residents in Kings County interested in learning more about the exploration and development of shale gas in their area. Natural Resources Minister Bruce Northrup and Environment Minister Margaret-Ann Blaney made the announcement today

The open house will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan, 29, at the Royal Canadian Legion, 66 Magnolia Ave., Sussex. Individuals and property owners with questions about exploration, environmental safeguards, landowner rights, economic benefits and employment are invited.

"This government made a clear commitment to ensure property owners were better informed about the process surrounding shale gas development, an industry that offers great economic revenue potential for New Brunswick," said Northrup. "We want to see this potential realized but in the proper manner so that people and communities are aware and part of the process.''

Officials from the departments of Natural Resources and Environment as well as from the New Brunswick Energy and Utilities Board and industry will be on hand to answer questions. A number of information booths and displays will be set up.

"As a government, we feel it is extremely important to communicate with New Brunswickers and to engage them on the issue of shale gas exploration," said Blaney. "This information session will provide the public with an opportunity to learn more about shale gas exploration from the experts who work in and regulate the industry."
