FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government has issued a request for proposals to enter into an agreement for potash exploration rights in the Salt Springs area.

“Our priorities are job creation, righting our fiscal ship and making life more affordable for families," said Energy and Mines Minister Donald Arseneault. "With our province’s proven track record of potash development, I am confident that this request for proposals will help generate much needed economic activity."

The Salt Springs Exploration Agreement Area is located adjacent to the former Cassidy Lake potash mine, less than 60 km northeast of the Port of Saint John. New Brunswick is the only potash-producing region on the east coast of North America.

This request for proposals follows the government’s support for a number of major energy projects in the province that will contribute to the economy including the Atlantic Potash’s recently-proposed fertilizer plant in Saint John, Repsol’s plans to build an LNG export facility, the Energy East Pipeline, and the Sisson mine.

“We believe in a diversified approach to developing our economy, rather than in putting all our eggs in one basket," said Arseneault. "Responsible natural resource exploration is simply one of the best ways to support our goals and initiatives.”

An information package outlining the terms and conditions for submitting a proposal is available online. The submission deadline is 1:30 p.m., May 29.
