FREDERICTON (GNB) – Thirty firefighters are being sent to northern Saskatchewan to help battle wildfires.

“In New Brunswick, we are fortunate to have well-trained firefighters who are ready to help their counterparts in other jurisdictions when called upon,” said Natural Resources Minister Denis Landry. “With our province’s fire index low, we are able to send crews to Saskatchewan while ensuring our forests remain protected.”

Two crews will be leaving today from Moncton and Fredericton. They will be working alongside firefighters from Saskatchewan and other provinces to assist in containing and extinguishing the wildfires.

As of June 29, there were 115 active fires in Saskatchewan; 37 were larger than 100 hectares. As of today there were 615 forest fires in Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories.

In May, 26 firefighters from New Brunswick were sent to battle fires in Cold Lake, Alberta. They were on the scene for 14 days.
