FREDERICTON (GNB) – An e-Licensing system introduced last year to make it easier for fishing enthusiasts, hunters and trappers to obtain licences online has resulted in more than 100,000 Outdoors Cards being distributed to New Brunswickers.
The Outdoors Card provides an identification number unique to cardholders, which they use for all their licensing needs.
“We are pleased with the response to our e-Licensing system,” said Natural Resources Minister Denis Landry. “We are continuing to build the system and to phase in new licence options as we go forward.”
So far, e-Licensing has worked well with fishing licences and resident moose draw applications. The system will not be available for the sale of 2016 varmint and bear licences; they will be sold through vendors and Service New Brunswick centres.
The department is aiming, however, to have all deer, bird and small game, resident moose, fur harvester’s and rabbit licences available through e-Licensing this year.
Landry reminded hunters who were accustomed to using a Medicare card to apply for the moose draw that this practice is being discontinued. He urged those hunters to apply for their Outdoors Card now and link their past application history to the card so that their previous applications are not lost. The more one applies and is not drawn for a moose licence, the better the subsequent chances are of being drawn.
Last year, more than 60,000 people applied for the 4,592 available licences. There were 3,729 moose harvested.
