FREDERICTON (GNB) – As the weather warms, anglers are getting their gear ready for the opening of the 2016 fishing season.

The season opens on April 15 on many rivers and brooks in the province, with additional rivers and lakes opening on May 1 and northern lakes opening May 15.

Anglers are reminded they can purchase their licence online, from the convenience of home, by using the Department of Natural Resources web-based e-Licensing system. Anglers who prefer to purchase their licence in person can continue to do so at Service New Brunswick centres and through private vendors.

As people begin to head out on the water, the department is asking anglers to report their catch online or by using the postage-paid survey card provided in the middle of the Fish 2016 book. The department relies on information provided by anglers to better manage the province’s recreational fishing resources.

At present, Fisheries and Oceans Canada has not finalized Atlantic salmon management measures for 2016. Anglers who are seeking information about Atlantic salmon harvest limits and angling gear restrictions for the 2016 recreational salmon fishery should contact Fisheries and Oceans Canada at 506-851-2435 or consult its website.
