FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government has announced it will set a timber objective for private woodlots.

“We are doubling down on our efforts to increase supply from private woodlots as a way to help energize the private sector,” said Natural Resources and Energy Development Minister Mike Holland. “This decision will allow our forest to mature, which will create more value for New Brunswickers and the forest industry.”

This will be accompanied by a long-term silviculture strategy. In addition, the government will evaluate options to re-focus the New Brunswick Forest Products Commission to ensure its purpose and powers are implemented and well-functioning.

Further, options will be reviewed to optimize services from private woodlot marketing boards, the government will consult with First Nations over the coming months and work with the forest industry to develop a Crown forest management plan.

“Our government’s vision is to have private woodlot owners active in the management of their property, committed to long-term sustainability, viewing their woodlots as assets and proud to be involved in forestry in this province,” said Holland. “Forests are part of our heritage and we want more people participating in forest management. This will be good for the forest and the economy.”

There will also be no increase to the Crown wood supply for the next five years.

These measures are part of a sustainable forestry initiative. The first major step was taken in October, when the provincial government announced it would more than double the percentage of protected and conserved areas including freshwater, forests and other wild spaces.

Energizing the private sector is one of the government’s key priorities. More information about the government’s priorities and measurements is available online.
