The Government of New Brunswick has led a provincial initiative since 2019 to double the amount of protected land in New Brunswick and has achieved the target of 10% protection. New Brunswickers now have 552 Nature Legacy protected areas, totaling 384,789 ha to enjoy.

This success, which belongs to all New Brunswick citizens, would not have been possible without help from the public, Indigenous Nations, scientists, naturalists, conservation organizations, and outdoor clubs. Gratitude goes out to all who nominated areas, shared local knowledge, or offered information to support decisions.

This achievement re-affirms the Government of New Brunswick’s commitment to responsible resource management and the safeguarding of biodiversity, of climate resilient landscapes, and of spaces that connect people with nature. Forested, wetland, and riverine areas, providing valuable wildlife habitat, will now remain intact for future generations.

Stay tuned as we continue to build New Brunswick’s network of protected land and consider future conservation targets to ease the impacts of climate change.

"We recognize that only through a collaborative effort can such an ambitious task be achieved. Our department is engaging with First Nations, conservation organizations, and natural resource industries to achieve the target."
