BEIRUT (CNB) - Competitions in judo and beach volleyball began yesterday at the 6th Jeux de la Francophonie in Beirut, Lebanon.

In judo, Josh Shannon of Saint John won his first match in the - 60 kg category by ippon against Mamebir Ndiayé of Sénégal before losing by ippon against Fabric Flammand of the team representing the French community in Belgium. He lost in repêchage to Deza Eli Gratte of the Ivory Coast.

In beach volleyball, the Jill Blanchard and Cherie Campbell duo lost 2-0 by 21-12 and 21-11 scores to Muriel Graessili and Romana Schmocker of Switzerland. Corey Akerley and Michael Waugh lost 2-1 against Andy Sutter and Roman Sutter of Switzerland by 21-13, 20-22 and 15-9 scores.
