FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following message was issued today by Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Francine Landry in recognition of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO's sponsorship of International Adult Learners' Week, April 12- 18:

Each year New Brunswick joins the global movement to raise awareness of the importance of education and adult literacy by recognizing International Adult Learners’ Week.

Literacy is an essential building block in the development of a vibrant society and a prosperous economy. Adult literacy and workplace essential skills are necessary for New Brunswickers to fully participate in today’s workforce.

Our government is working with community organizations to enable adult learners to have access to free, relevant learning opportunities. These opportunities take place in community settings, online or within workplaces. Adult literacy programs address a wide range of training needs including: Academic Upgrading; Digital Literacy; GED Preparation; Workplace Essential Skills; and Training and Skills Development.

Our government has committed to implementing a comprehensive literacy strategy that involves the public education system, educational researchers, employers and community organizations. We continue to collaborate with our stakeholders to enhance current efforts, reduce barriers to participation for adult learners and explore new ways to increase literacy levels in New Brunswick.

Lifelong learning helps grow our economy and create jobs. We know that when adult learners succeed it helps their families, communities and employers.

Together, with a strategic approach to advancing literacy, we can move New Brunswick forward and create the most job-ready generation we have ever seen.

I thank all our partners and the many dedicated volunteers who remain committed to literacy. And, most importantly, I acknowledge the courageous adult learners who are taking bold steps towards a brighter future.
