MIRAMICHI (GNB) – The provincial government is investing $196,000 in the Miramichi John Howard Society through the Targeted Initiative for Older Workers program.

“Older workers are an essential part of our families, communities and workplaces,” said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Donald Arseneault. “By supporting this program, we are giving them the resources and skills they need to continue as active members of their communities so they can enjoy a higher quality of life.”

The program began this summer, helping people over the age of 55 to re-enter the workforce. A variety of services are offered, including resumé writing, job search strategies and interview tips. The aim of the program is to reach more than 40 participants, specifically those in communities affected by significant downsizing or closures. 

“Governments and workforce experts agree the labour force participation of older workers will be essential for future economic prosperity,” said Bill Bastarache, executive director of the John Howard Society of New Brunswick. “This funding will help older workers who are facing challenges and barriers that prevent them from successfully re-entering the workforce, such as chronic illness, mental health issues, disabilities, and low skill or literacy levels.”

The initiative is funded by the department’s Research and Innovation program, supporting pilot projects and research leading to new ways to help people transition to the labour force. The Miramichi John Howard Society project will be funded through this program until June 2017.

The Research and Innovation program is made possible through the Canada-New Brunswick Labour Market Development Agreement and the Canada-New Brunswick Labour Market Agreement. More information is available online or by calling the nearest provincial employment office.
