FREDERICTON (GNB) – Young readers are encouraged to register for the 2017 Summer Reading Club, being held at New Brunswick’s public libraries in June, July and August. This year’s theme is Canada 150, and the slogan is Celebrate!

“Your government recognizes that reading opens up a world of new ideas and possibilities for people, both young and old,” said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Donald Arseneault. “The summer book club plays an important role in engaging our children in literature and leading them on the pathway for a successful future.”

Registration is now open at all public libraries and on the Summer Reading Club website. At this website, children will also find games, theme-related trivia and suggested reading lists, including books available for children with print disabilities.

Each year since 1991, children of all ages have been invited to join the Summer Reading Club. This is a free program that encourages reading during the summer school break and promotes literacy.

Last year, the 11,112 club participants read 291,062 books, magazines or websites during the Summer Reading Club. This included three children who registered through the Provincial Talking Books-by-Mail Service, available to patrons who self-identify as having a disability that prevents them from reading standard-size print.

“Literacy helps New Brunwickers reach their full potential, achieve goals, and take advantage of opportunities in a knowledge-based economy,” said Finance Minister Cathy Rogers, who is also the minister responsible for literacy. “Children can explore a variety of topics, including new cultures, places, and subjects through reading. Your government encourages children to join the book club and read with their families this summer.”
