FREDERICTON (GNB) – Students in schools, universities and community colleges in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island will be invited to promote and strengthen their entrepreneurial skills from Oct. 30 to Nov. 3. as part of the second annual career week organized by the Council of Atlantic Ministers of Education and Training.
The theme of Atlantic Canada Career Week is Strengthening Students to Strengthen Communities by Empowering Our Students through Social Enterprise and Entrepreneurship. It is meant to promote personal growth and empowerment with opportunities for students to create connections among themselves, their interests and strengths within an entrepreneurial mindset. The week allows students to make connections to their families, culture, school, post-secondary education institution, local organizations, neighbourhood, towns, cities and campuses. Social enterprise and entrepreneurship will be the backdrop to support career development.
As part of the career week, activities have been developed to help students reflect on personal strengths and opportunities, as well as to help them work toward their goals. All materials produced for the week are available online. Also on the event website are videos featuring students reflecting on their career and learning journeys.
Atlantic ministers of education, post-secondary education and training aim to support and promote career development across the region. They said this initiative complements provincial initiatives to help students effectively manage career choices.
The week builds on activities emerging from goals outlined in Future in Focus – Atlantic Career Development Framework for Public Education: 2015-2020, released by the council in June 2015. Other regional initiatives are the development of a competency framework to demonstrate the skills needed to effectively transition from studies to work, and an analysis of strengths and gaps in the transition of students from public to post-secondary education. Both initiatives will be completed in 2018.
The council is an agency of the departments responsible for public and post-secondary education. Its purpose is to enhance co-operation in public (entry to Grade 12) and post-secondary education in Atlantic Canada by working together to improve learning, optimize efficiencies and bring added value to provincial initiatives.
