SHIPPAGAN (CNB) – The federal, provincial and municipal governments announced funding to upgrade the Town of Shippagan’s drinking water system and wastewater collection facilities.

“Our investment will make a difference in the quality of the drinking water and the treatment of wastewater for the residents of Shippagan,” said Economic Development Minster Paul Robichaud. “Our government works regularly in partnership with the federal government and municipalities to deliver real results like this important water and wastewater improvement project for the municipality.”

“Our investment in upgrading Shippagan's wastewater collection system will address significant environmental and health and safety concerns,” said Bernard Valcourt, minister of state for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and La Francophonie. “Moreover, it will give residents access to a reliable and constant supply of drinking water year-round. Projects like this not only help to improve the quality of life of residents, but also allow communities to ensure their future economic development, which is the priority of our government.”

Valcourt spoke on behalf of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities Minister Denis Lebel.

The federal and provincial governments will each invest $718,820 in the project through the Building Canada Fund, Communities component. The Town of Shippagan will also invest $718,820.

Currently, wastewater spills into the storm sewers and Shippagan Bay, threatening the local shellfish industry and causing backup problems for local businesses. Part of the project will involve improvements to the drinking water system. Funding for the project is contingent on completion of all contractual agreements, including a pending environmental impact assessment with the municipality.

“Through this partnership with two levels of government, the Town of Shippagan will continue to strategically develop at all levels, including the health, safety, environmental and economic levels,” said Mayor Jonathan Roch Noël. “The Town of Shippagan is proud to invest in its future for its residents.”
