SAINTE-ANNE-DE-MADAWASKA (GNB) – Residents and community members joined provincial representatives today to celebrate the official opening of a new sports dome in Sainte-Anne-de-Madawaska.

"Investing in community infrastructure projects that promote healthy living is a key part of our government's plan to rebuild New Brunswick and create jobs," said Premier David Alward. "The recreational centre and the new sports dome are a valued part of life in Sainte-Anne-de-Madawaska and the surrounding region. Our investment will enhance activities available to the community and will continue to encourage social and physical activities among youth, families and residents."

The structure will increase the availability of social and physical activities, including skating and hockey in the winter; and tennis, soccer and basketball in the summer. A walking track will be available throughout the year.

"The investment from the provincial government enabled the municipality to go ahead with this project, and I am proud that we now have this modern infrastructure to allow residents in our community to be healthier by having access to many more activities all year round despite the weather," said Sainte-Anne-de-Madawaska Mayor Roger Levesque. "The new dome will also drive the local economy since it will be used for a range of social activities such as the seniors' games, the firefighter association's annual tournament and activities surrounding the Congrès mondial acadien 2014."

The provincial government invested $148,000 in the project, which involved laying the foundation, installing the dome and carrying out electrical work. The Village of Sainte-Anne-de-Madawaska invested $75,000.
