ESCUMINAC (GNB) - Through investments from the provincial and federal governments, Raymond O'Neill and Son Fisheries Ltd. has undertaken a modernization initiative in order to meet new Safe Quality Food certification requirements.

"Our government's investment in Raymond O'Neill and Son Fisheries is an important part of our plan to create opportunities in our communities," said Southwest Miramichi MLA Jake Stewart. "Making production and product quality improvements are important investments to ensure the viability of this company, one of the region's top employers."

Stewart attended the announcement for Economic Development Minister Bruce Fitch.

Three specific projects have been undertaken by the company. In order to meet the certification requirements, the two first projects involve building renovations and modifications, including hiring a qualified consultant to review and update their current quality management plan, define work instructions, job descriptions, and train Safe Quality Food practitioners. A third project involves upgrading the water treatment equipment of the live holding tanks to improve product quality and increase energy efficiency.

"Our government is pleased to invest in innovative companies like Raymond O'Neill & Son Fisheries," said Miramichi MP Tilly O'Neill Gordon. "Today's investment will help the company renovate its facilities and hire the expertise needed to meet Safe Quality Food certification requirements, which will in turn boost the company's export capabilities and position them to benefit from our recent trade agreements with the European Union and South Korea."

O'Neill Gordon attended the announcement for Rob Moore, federal minister of state for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

"Raymond O'Neill and Son Fisheries is very grateful for the support of the federal and provincial governments," said Raymond O'Neill, company owner. "Their assistance with the plant renovations and program consultant has allowed us to move towards Safe Quality Food Certification in the effort to keep our existing customers as well as penetrate new markets. In addition, the assistance with the water treatment equipment for the holding pond will allow us to increase production days, the number of employees hired and the quality of our existing lobster products."

The provincial government is contributing $76,000 towards the project while the federal government, through ACOA's Business Development Program, is providing $213,200. The company is investing $131,200.
