SAINT JOHN – The provincial government is investing $50,000 for upgrades to the Royal Canadian Legion Lancaster Branch 69 in Saint John.

"Our government will continue to work with Royal Canadian Legions and veterans' organizations to help and honour those who have sacrificed so much for our country," said Healthy and Inclusive Communities Minister Dorothy Shephard, who attended on behalf of Natural Resources Minister Paul Robichaud, who is also the minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “The provincial government is proud to invest in infrastructure projects that help improve our Royal Canadian Legions.”

Funding provided by the Regional Development Corporation's Family and Youth Capital Assistance Program will be used for an infrastructure improvement project at the branch, including renovations to the upper banquet hall.

“Thanks to the province’s investment we have modernized our plumbing and electrical systems,” said Royal Canadian Legion Lancaster Branch 69 president Larry Lynch. “We are ready for another 50 years of service to the community, our more than 600 members and more than 200 veterans.”

In November 2012, the provincial government expanded the Family and Youth Capital Assistance Program – which had been providing funding for family and youth groups to renovate or refurbish their facilities – to include veterans’ organizations. Eligible groups may apply for non-repayable contributions of up to 50 per cent of total approved costs to a maximum of $50,000. To date, 21 projects for legions have been funded totaling $282,476.
