SHIPPAGAN (GNB) - The provincial government is investing $ 1.1 million for the expansion of the gymnasium at École Envolée Shippagan, $100,000 of which will be spent this year on architectural planning.

A total of $ 30,000 will also be invested to purchase new playground equipment for the school.

"The potential of our young people is one of New Brunswick’s most precious resources,” said Natural Resources Minister Paul Robichaud, who is also the minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “In order for each student to develop to their full potential, we must invest in and provide a learning environment that meets the needs of our children and community."

Robichaud attended the event on behalf of Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Mari-Claude Blais.

The expansion will see the gymnasium expanded from 416 to 682 square metres. Architectural planning is expected to be completed by November.

"Our government wants to help young people adopt a healthier and more active lifestyle,” said Robichaud. “The expansion of the gymnasium promotes physical activity in our youth."

Funds for the new playground come from the Regional Development Corporation’s Family and Youth Capital Assistance Program.

"This program has a large impact on communities for minimal investment," said Robichaud. “I am convinced that the benefits of this investment will be felt for years to come."

The playground will be used by students of the school and the community as a whole. One portion of the playground will serve students in kindergarten through Grade 2 while the other will accommodate students in Grades 3-5.

"Our government cares about the health of our young people,” said Robichaud. “It is important to foster an interest in physical activity during childhood. We want to ensure that our young people remain active and adopt a healthy lifestyle," said Blais.
